Yippee! It's Walk Yor Dog Month

Walk Your Dog Month runs from the 1st to 31st January each year. It is celebrated annually to highlight how important it is to exercise your dog regularly, to find outdoor activities to do with your furry friends and to ensure responsible dog ownership. This monthly event is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the bond between you and your canine partner and enjoy the great outdoors together.

On cold, wet, wintery days walking your dog can feel like an absolute chore which is probably why the month of January was chosen! Think of it as a New Year’s resolution. During the coldest and shortest days of the year, now is the time to focus and introduce your dog to some pawsome new adventures.

Here are some great ideas to try:

Discover new dog walks - explore different dog friendly beaches, nature trails, footpaths or just find some new streets to walk around to give your dog some new smells to sniff.

Commit to daily walks regardless of the weather - this is an excellent opportunity for some retail therapy and to buy yourself some new warm, waterproof dog walking gear. Many outdoor clothing shops like
Snow and Rock, Mountain Warehouse, Millets, Go Outdoors, Decathlon, etc are all dog friendly so take your dog with you to buy your new clothes. You may even find something for your canine friend too!

Involve the whole family - experience your dog walks together with trips to the beach or the local park to make it a shared, fun activity.

Improve Social Skills - Use your dog walks to meet other dogs and people so your furry companion can hone their socialisation skills by meeting and playing with other pups and their humans.

Capture your Journey - take photos of those very special moments with your pooch and share them on social media using the dedicated hashtags of #WalkYourDogMonth #DogExercise #HealthyPets #DogWalking #HappyDogs

If you work long hours in the day, night time strolls may be the only solution when walking your dog every day. At night, ensure that you both have reflective clothing and be aware of potential dangers from the road traffic, poor visibility and (yes, I’ve done it) getting lost. Carry your fully-charged mobile phone and let people know your planned route.  A walk with the dog in the great British outdoors is one of the best ways to unwind after a busy day at work.

Walk Your Dog Month reminds us that our canine friends require regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Dogs truly are man’s best friend and this month serves as a great reminder of the companionship and joy that our furry friends bring to our lives every day.
